A Day Upstate in the Hanwag Makra Pro
We spent a day upstate recently with Blair of Amateurs Mag and a small group of friends. The plan was simple. Leave Brooklyn early, get out of the city, spend a few hours on the trail, and take the day as it comes.

They headed out in the morning and made their way north, trading traffic and noise for open space and fresh air. Once on the trail, the pace stayed relaxed. No rush, no set agenda. Just walking, stopping for views, talking, and letting the day unfold naturally. The kind of day that reminds you why you make the effort to get out of the city in the first place.

The Hanwag Makra Pro GTX was worn throughout. It’s a shoe that sits in an interesting place. Technically capable, built for demanding terrain, but not something that feels overbuilt or heavy on foot. The Makra is lightweight and stable, with a GORE-TEX lining that handles wet conditions without much thought. The upper is made from Perwanger leather, which gives it durability and structure while still feeling flexible enough for a full day of wear.

What makes it work for a day like this is how easily it moves between environments. It feels appropriate on the trail, but it doesn’t feel out of place before or after. There’s a balance there that not every hiking shoe gets right.

After a few hours outside, they made their way back and stopped for an early dinner before heading into the evening. Good food, good company, and a slower end to the day.

It wasn’t about pushing distance or testing limits. Just a straightforward day outside, spent well.
The Hanwag Makra Pro is arriving soon at Hatchet Supply.
