Guiding with Purpose: Amid Terrain on Passion, People, and the Path Ahead
Meet Tyrell Henderson, better known as Amid Terrain - a passionate outdoor enthusiast and community hike guide based in Connecticut.
Through his grassroots initiative, Tyrell leads guided hikes that bring people together to explore nature, build connections, and promote wellness. What began as a personal love for the outdoors has evolved into a mission to serve and uplift his community.
Recently, Hatchet Supply partnered with Amid Terrain for his first-ever overnight group hike, a memorable step in his growing journey. We caught up with Tyrell to talk about the path that led him here, his favorite trail essentials, and what lies ahead for Amid Terrain.

What first inspired your love for the outdoors? Was there a particular hike or experience that sparked it for you?
My love for the outdoors was truly ignited during my backpacking trip on the Presidential Traverse. Navigating those rugged peaks, experiencing the raw power of nature, and overcoming challenging terrains provided me with a profound sense of accomplishment and connection with the wilderness. The breathtaking views, the changing weather, and the camaraderie built along the trail made it an unforgettable experience. That adventure sparked a passion for outdoor exploration and solidified my commitment to embracing nature’s beauty and challenges.
What motivated you to start Amid Terrain as a community hike club? Why was this the right time to give back?
Amid Terrain was born from a desire to create a space where people could connect with nature and each other. After witnessing how transformative outdoor experiences were for my own well-being, I felt inspired to share that with others. The timing felt right as more people sought meaningful connections post-pandemic, and I knew that fostering a supportive outdoor community could make a lasting impact.

What’s your most essential piece of gear you bring on every hike? Anything you can’t hit the trail without?
Honestly, this might sound silly, but a pair Oakley sunglasses are a must-have. They’re the only constant item that I always carry when I’m on the trails! I have Oakleys for both low light and bright conditions, and a pair that are polarized to enhance visibility. They’re so versatile and stylish, if I may add.
You’ve built something that’s as much about people as it is about hiking. What does it mean to you to serve your community through Amid Terrain?
Serving the community through Amid Terrain means creating a space where people feel seen, supported, and inspired. It’s about more than just hiking; it’s fostering connections, encouraging personal growth, and building a network of adventurers who uplift each other. Witnessing friendships form and confidence grow within our community is incredibly rewarding.

What’s next for Amid Terrain? Any future hikes, programs, or goals you’re excited to explore?
We’re excited to expand Amid Terrain with new programs that focus on outdoor education, sustainability, and inclusivity. Future hikes will explore diverse terrains. We’re really hoping to bring our community hikes global! Our goal is to continue growing our community, inspiring more people to embrace the outdoors, and creating unforgettable adventures together.
