We celebrate Barbour's 125th anniversary in 2019, a significant milestone in the company’s history. Still family owned (5th generation), this year is a celebration of the Barbour family who since 1894 have nurtured, guided and led the company from its small beginnings in 1894 supplying mariners with oilskins in South Shields in the North East of England, to the global lifestyle brand it is today.

The Barbour story began in 1894 when John Barbour, an entrepreneurial Scotsman from Galloway came across the border and opened the first Barbour store in the marketplace in South Shields. He began by selling oilskins and other garments to protect the growing community of mariners from the worst of the North Sea weather. Soon, this extended to farmers, labourers and shepherds who all earned their living outdoors and by the beginning of the next century, Barbour’s oilskins were well known throughout the UK.

To support this very special anniversary collection, ten long-time Barbour wearers and friends of the brand who all have their own personal relationship with the brand were captured wearing Icons Re-Engineered jackets from the collection. To celebrate the birth of waxed cotton, Edith Bowman and Johannes Huebl wore the Men's and Women's Icons Haydon Waxed Jackets.

Broadcaster and writer Edith Bowman has been working in TV and radio for over 20 years. As an author, Edith Bowman’s Great British Music Festivals was published in 2015.
